Foundations in English Language Studies (Year 1, Semester 1)Nature of language; different approaches to the study of language; basics of English linguistic analysis; English language change and variation, Conversation Analysis (CA) and analysis of talk-in-interaction, application of linguistic and analytical skills to an investigation of English in different contexts
Current Issues in Applied English Language Studies (Year 1, Semester 1)Key issues in applied English language studies; analysis, discussion and critical evaluation of contemporary research; a review and critique of research studies relevant to areas of interest
Second Language Acquisition (Year 1, Semester 1)Differences between first and second language acquisition; naturalistic and instructed second language acquisition; theories of second language acquisition; factors affecting second language acquisition and their implications; practices and strategies in second language acquisition
Academic English (Year 1, Semester 1)Reading and writing for academic purposes; citing sources; avoiding plagiarism; summarizing; paraphrasing; creating references; synthesizing information from various sources; critically evaluating research articles; writing a literature review 
Research Methodology (Year 1, Semester 2)Research principles and designs; quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods research; research process and ethics; developing research proposals or professional innovations; use of technology in presenting research proposals or professional innovations

Students also take the following non-credit support courses:

Practical Research Skills (Year 1, Semester 2)Hands-on experience in research instrument development and validation; research sampling methods; quantitative and qualitative research analyses; data presentation
English for Research Publication (Year 2, Semester 2)Writing research papers for conferences and publications; giving oral research presentations

Professional Track

Module: Language Analysis and Language Acquisition (Year 1, Semester 1)Frameworks for analysis and critical evaluation of spoken and written English used in professional contexts; second language acquisition; English linguistics and critical approaches to English language studies
Module: Current Research in Applied English Language Studies (Year 2, Semester 1)Current issues in applied English language studies research; principles of practitioner research; qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies; integration of research and professional practice

Reflective Professional Development (Year 1, Semester 2)Professional development via reflective coaching; supporting English language practitioners within their own professional settings; problems and solutions for professional development; reflection on the application of newly acquired knowledge and skills under guidance of an expert and/or an instructor
Academic English (Year 2, Semester 1)Reading and writing for academic purposes; citing sources; avoiding plagiarism; summarizing; paraphrasing; creating references; synthesizing information from various sources; critically evaluating research articles; writing a literature review 
Report Writing and Presentations
