The MA in Applied English Language Studies (Academic Track) aims to produce graduates who can rely on a range of advanced knowledge to analyze contemporary English. You will learn how to research English from different perspectives and improve your ability to communicate and work independently.
The program can help prepare you for a number of different careers where academic skills in applied English language studies can be an advantage, including:
- University lecturer or researcher
- Teacher in public or private schools
- Translator or interpreter
- Editor or proofreader
- Content creator

Courses
Our core courses cover key aspects of applied English language studies and help students develop the competences they need to complete their study and further their career.
We offer a range of elective courses in different areas of applied linguistics that allow students to gain new theoretical and practical knowledge.
Students are provided with several non-credit courses to help develop their English language competency.

Study mode and schedule
Classes for the Academic Track are typically offered on weekdays (Monday-Friday), onsite at Prince of Songkla University, Hat Yai Campus. In special cases, activities may also be offered online.
Entry requirements
To apply for the program, you must have:
- A Bachelor’s degree in either a related field (English, Linguistics, Intercultural Communication) or any other field if you have relevant professional experience. Contact us if you are not sure about your qualifications.
- A valid English proficiency score equivalent to CEFR B1+ from a recognized test, for example IELTS (5.0 or above), TOEFL ITP (500 or above), TOEFL iBT (64 or above), PSU-TEP (75 or above). Note: Graduates of the BA in English at the Faculty of Liberal Arts may also use their TOEIC score as part of their application.
To apply for the Research Only Plan (A1), you must additionally have:
- A cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher in your Bachelor’s degree, with evidence of research experience or other equivalent work as well as of abilities relevant to research (e.g. producing research reports, publications in recognized journals, etc.).
- A valid English proficiency score equivalent to CEFR B2+ from a recognized test, for example, IELTS (6.0 or above), TOEFL ITP (547 or above), TOEFL iBT (78 or above), PSU-TEP (85% or above, all skills). Note: Graduates of the BA in English at the Faculty of Liberal Arts may also use their TOEIC score as part of their application.

Domestic students: 27,000 Thai baht per semester (regular program)
International students: 54,000 Thai baht per semester (regular program)
Scholarship opportunities
The Faculty of Liberal Arts and Prince of Songkla University are offering various scholarships to students starting in 2025:
- The Faculty of Liberal Arts offers two tuition fee waivers (100% scholarships at domestic rate) per year. Students who commit to publish their work in international journals are also eligible for 50% coverage of tuition fee cost (domestic rate). To apply for this scholarship, prepare (1) a motivation letter and (2) a resume and submit them with your application for MA study. - The PSU Graduate School periodically offers full scholarships for MA students (fees at domestic rate and monthly expenses). To apply for this scholarship, you must first be accepted in our MA programme and must then prepare a research proposal (approximately 10 pages). - Tuition fee scholarships (50%) may also be awarded by the Research Center for Language, Culture, and Human Development in Lower ASEAN. For information about these scholarships, contact the center or the lecturers affiliated with it directly.
